The conference will focus on the Contemporary Issues of International Law.

OBJECTIVE
As we convene for this milestone event, marking a decade of collective journey in exploring, understanding, and shaping the contours of international law, we find ourselves at a pivotal juncture in history. In an era characterized by rapid globalization, technological advancements, and increasingly complex transnational challenges, the role of international law has never been more critical. Over the course of the three days, we will be privileged to host an array of distinguished speakers, including eminent jurists, seasoned diplomats, acclaimed academics, and insightful practitioners from around the globe. Through a series of keynote addresses, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, we will delve into pressing issues and emerging trends in international law, encompassing areas such as, Law of the Sea, Arbitration, Human Rights, Climate change, Technology and Law etc.

This conference will also serve as a testament to the enduring legacy and vision of the Indian Society of International Law. Founded with the objective of promoting and advancing the understanding and practice of international law, the Society has, over the years, emerged as a centre of scholarly excellence and intellectual discourse. We are immensely proud of the collaborative ecosystem we have nurtured, bringing together minds and voices from diverse backgrounds to contribute to the global dialogue on international law.

As we embark on this intellectual journey together, let us be inspired by the collective wisdom, diverse perspectives, and shared aspirations that bring us together. May our deliberations over the next few days contribute meaningfully to the advancement of international law and the fostering of a more just and equitable world order.

A Word About ISIL
The Indian Society of International Law (ISIL), a premier national institution for teaching, research and promotion of international law in India was established in 1959, primarily due to the efforts of the late V.K. Krishna Menon, Former Defence Minister. Inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, it has indeed been a long and fulfilling journey for the ISIL and it has carved a niche for itself among the community of international lawyers throughout the world. This would not have been possible but for the hard work of giants like Judge Nagendra Singh, Dr. K. Krishna Rao, Mr. G. S. Pathak, Justice R. S. Pathak, Mr. Ram Niwas Mirdha, Prof. M. K. Nawaz, Prof. Upendra Baxi, Prof.R.P. Anand, Prof. Rahmatullah Khan and a host of others.

The objectives of the ISIL inter alia are:

  • To foster nation-wide, the study and development of international law
  • To interpret through its forums and publications, the application of international law as chiefly affecting India
  • To encourage the comparative study of the application of international law in other states and
  • To promote research in international law.
In more than six decades of its existence, the ISIL, under the leadership and guidance of distinguished persons, has grown into a prestigious research and teaching centre of international law in India.

Soon after its inauguration in 1959, ISIL launched the Indian Journal of International Law, and also its teaching wing, the Indian Academy of International Law and Diplomacy which offers a variety of Programmes for people interested in augmenting their knowledge of international law and international affairs. The Society offers Doctoral Scholarships to Ph.D. Research Scholars registered in the Indian universities. The Society conducts various training programmes for officers of Indian foreign services, Indian forest services and Indian economic services. ISIL undertakes research projects. It holds annual conferences for the benefit of the Indian teachers and practitioners. It also conducts an annual V. K. Krishna Menon Memorial Lecture in memory of its founding President. It also organizes thematic international conferences, the last one being World Congress on Contemporary Issues of International Law" from 9-11 January 2015.

May I, on behalf of the Indian Society of International Law, most cordially invite you all to the 10th International Conference on International Law to be convened from 25th to 27th October 2024.

Please do not hesitate to get back to me for any clarifications, or exchange of views on the concept and other aspects of the Conference. Looking forward to receiving you at New Delhi in October 2024.
